"POWER" Tee (AFRICAN AMERICAN STORIES REMEMBERED SERIES)
This is the first tee, “POWER”, released in our limited run - “AFRICAN AMERICAN STORIES REMEMBERED SERIES.”
Each tee is simple and commemorates an important story about Christiansburg Industrial Institute (1866-1966), the first high school in Southwest Virginia to educate the formerly enslaved.
This first tee, “POWER,” recognizes CII’s students’ collective strength and tenacity as they grew into young adults in southwest Virginia despite surrounding racial and economic injustices. We are today inspired by their power and energy.
Showcased on the tee is a digitized black and white historic photograph from the John F. Banks Collection, the original image is housed at the Christiansburg Institute Museum & Archives (CIMA). The image features CII students posing confidently on top of a classic pickup truck before the schools homecoming parade it’s 185-acre campus in Christiansburg, Virginia.
A banner of text lists the immediate counties and cities where students were traveling from; by bus, by train, by car, and by foot in order to attend Christiansburg Industrial Institute and receive a high school level education.
